Drivers take older people to the parties and stay with them to enjoy the get-together. Over time, drivers and older guests get to know each other well and together you will spend many hours full of fun, laughter, and stories.

As a tea party driver, you liaise with your group coordinator and take older guests to and from the tea parties each month. Staying at the tea party is part of your role, so it’s much more than being a driver.

Our friendly gardeners are looking for more helping hands to join the teams in maintaining our tranquil grounds.

If you enjoy the outdoors and nature, willing to get your hands a little dirty and appreciate beautiful spaces then this could be the volunteering role for you.

Our gardens, known for their therapeutic value, are for everyone and our volunteers help in making them look beautiful all year round for patients, families and visitors.

You’ll be helping with regular activities such as planting, propagating, deadheading, pruning and weeding and for the more energetic scarifying, mulching, watering and general tidying.

You don’t have to be a horticultural expert – we’ll guide you and help expand your gardening skills and knowledge along the way.

The purpose of role is to raise vital funds for the Royal British Legion’s mission by organising and conducting the Poppy Appeal in your designated area, working in support and under the guidance of the Local Community Fundraiser (CFR) and others appointed to assist.

Tasks.

In conjunction with the local CFR carry out an annual review of the operation of the Poppy Appeal in your designated area and agree a set of actions to ensure the maximum possible funds are raised during the PA in your area.

In conjunction with the local CFR, organise the recruitment and briefing of sufficient collectors and helpers to ensure sufficient coverage within your designated area.

Maintain and share with the CFR, accurate records of collectors and helpers operating in your area.

In conjunction with the local CFR, publicise and promote the Poppy Appeal in their area

Arrange for ordering, storage, distribution and collection of sufficient poppies, collecting trays, tins, wreaths and other Poppy Appeal supplies and materials in your area, ensuring accurate records of locations and recovery are kept.

Location.

At a pre-agreed location(s), usually within your designated area. You may also be required to attend briefings, training or meetings.

You will be a key part of the team that conserves two Sentinel locomotives that form part of the Trust Collection.

Working with a small team you will help to conserve these important objects so they are stable now, and can be enjoyed by future visitors. You will also explain the work and object history to visitors.

Main Tasks

Under the direction and supervision of the Collections Curator and an external Conservation Consultant you will be responsible for the day to day conservation work on the locomotives – this includes wet and dry cleaning; priming bare iron; painting; if appropriate carrying out some minor repairs; talking to visitors about the work; photographing all stages of the project.

Coalbrookdale – under one of the viaduct arches

Expected Commitment

We are looking for someone who can commit to at least one regular full day a week from September to November.

Training

The project will begin with a whole day training session led by an experienced Conservator. On the job training will also be provided as and when required.

More Information

The two sentinel locomotives are historically important parts of the Trusts Museum Collection, and displayed in a visible area of Coalbrookdale. The Trust has secured funding from the Association for Industrial Archaeology to carry out important conservation work. Please note the locomotives are not running, and this work is conservation (i.e. preserving what’s there) rather than restoration.

The role will require a reasonable amount of physical activity and working outside (though under some cover) in all weather. It will also involve talking to visitors of all ages and from diverse backgrounds.
