Read Easy Telford and Shropshire East
Read Easy UK is a national charity that supports volunteers to set up local groups to help their communities. There are currently over 60 and the Telford & Wrekin group was set up in October 2019. We are affiliated with Read Easy UK.
Our sole purpose is to provide free, confidential, one to one coaching to those who are 18 years or over and would like to improve their reading skills.
We know that over 8,500 adults in Telford & Wrekin struggle with everyday reading, for example, reading prescriptions, bus timetables, bills, forms etc.
If you would like to join our group, there are several volunteering opportunities available, varying from a few hours to a couple of days a week.
All the roles require basic IT skills – emails, zoom and Teams, Microsoft, report writing and online training. All roles are applied for and there’s an interview process, which is quite informal.
All our volunteers need to be actively involved in the running of the group. Read Easy groups provide rewarding volunteering opportunities for people who want to make a difference in their communities, while working alongside an interesting group of like-minded people.
Volunteer coaches meet with their reader in a public place (EG library) for two 30-minute sessions a week, all training and resources are provided for free, and are paid for by the group.
Volunteers on the Management Team share responsibility for the group and ensure we provide the best experience for those who come to us to improve their reading.
By helping adults to tackle their reading difficulties, Read Easy also enables the readers to become more independent, possibly move on to other forms of education if they wish, improve their employment opportunities, support their children’s or grandchildren’s reading, and begin to explore many other opportunities in life.
Above all, our readers experience remarkable improvements in their overall confidence and self-esteem.
